Graduate Certificate in Language

The Graduate Certificate in Language is an 18-unit program is offered by the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Law and, in the case of Indonesian, by the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

The languages available are:

  • French
  • Indonesian
  • Italian
  • Modern Greek
  • Spanish

Students can be accommodated at either beginners or advanced level (equivalent to Year 12 SACE continuers level) of linguistic competence.
The course must be studied part-time over a minimum period of three semesters.

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved bachelor degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution. The Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Course aims

The course aims to:

  • foster the development of linguistic, socio-cultural and communicative competencies in French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek or Spanish
  • expose students to a selected body of specific and cross-disciplinary knowledge relative to the language of study
  • develop students’ ability to respond to a variety of authentic texts presented in the language of study, corresponding to a low intermediate level of competence
  • develop students’ awareness of local and global communities of speakers relative to the language of study
  • develop students’ awareness of selected issues relating to cross- and intercultural communication
  • provide opportunities for metacognitive training to enhance language acquisition and maximise opportunities to progress in language learning within and beyond the classroom.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, students are expected to:

  • be able to communicate at a working level of competence in the target language
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of a selected body of specific and cross-disciplinary knowledge relative to the language of study
  • be able to understand and respond to authentic texts in the language of study
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to cross- and inter cultural communication and be better equipped to interact in a global, yet multilingual and multicultural world
  • have developed understanding and respect for local and global cultural and linguistic diversity
  • have developed an understanding of themselves as languages learners and users.

Credit

The Graduate Certificate in Language articulates with the Graduate Diploma in Language and the Master of Language Studies. 18 units of credit may be granted toward the Graduate Diploma in Language and Master of Language Studies for successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Language.

Students who have completed 18 units in the Graduate Diploma in Language can choose to exit with the Graduate Certificate in Language.

Program of study

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Language, students must complete 18 units of study in one language, with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study:

  • 13.5 units of Language topics
  • 4.5 units of Culture topics.
