Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies

The Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies is an 18-unit program offered by the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Law. It is taught at the Adelaide College of Divinity.

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved three year degree or equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution. However, the Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature. 

Course aims

This course is specifically aimed at teachers and other professionals as a form o fporessional development and training.  It is not a basic requirement for employment.  It is designed to provide teachers of religious education and other professionals in the field of religion with a sound understanding of contemporary theology and biblical studies and to provide opportunities to reflect on theological dimensions of professional and social life.  It is anticipated that this course will provide a pathway to further postgraduate study within Theology.

The Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies aims to provide teachers of religious education and other professionals in religion with opportunities to:

  • gain an introductory knowledge and understanding of contemporary theology and biblical studies
  • examine and reflect on theological dimensions of professional and social life
  • acquire knowledge and skills in several areas of contemporary academic theology.

Learning outcomes

At completion of the Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies, students will:

  • have developed an introductory knowledge and understanding of contemporary theology and biblical studies
  • be able to contribute to academic discussion on theological dimensions of professional and social life
  • be able to demonstrate their knowledge of several chosen areas of contemporary academic theology. 

Credit

Limited credit may be granted for recognition of prior studies undertaken at the University or other approved teriatry institutions.  Further information is available here.

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies, a student must complete 18 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study:
