Master of Teaching English as a Second Language

The Master of Teaching English as a Second Language is a 72-unit coursework program offered by the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Law. The course is offered over four semesters full-time, or the equivalent part-time.

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution.

Course aims

This degree aims to:
  • develop disciplinary knowledge in the field of second language acquisition
  • develop specific knowledge in the area of English as a Second Language (ESOL)
  • critique second language teaching methodologies
  • comprehend the interaction between culture and language
  • investigate the effect of English as a global language
  • identify research trends in the field of Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL).

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course students will be able to:
  • describe current theories in second language acquisition
  • articulate second language teaching methodologies
  • demonstrate second language teaching methodologies
  • identify pedagogical issues related to ESOL
  • integrate their knowledge of TESOL to produce a focussed research project.

Credit

Eligible students may be granted up to 36 units of credit for an approved four-year degree and/or relevant work experience.

Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language and/or the Graduate Diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language or an approved equivalent degree in a related field may receive credit upon admission to the Master of Teaching English as a Second Language.

Program of study

To qualify for the Master of Teaching English as a Second Language, a student must complete 72 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study:

  • 36 units of core topics
  • 36 units equivalent to a fourth year of study in the field of education, with an emphasis on learning and TESOL (credit for an approved four-year degree or for approved, relevant work experience may be granted within this component);
