A student who has completed all the requirements of The Bachelor of Creative Arts, or another qualification which the Faculty Board agrees is equivalent, may be accepted as a candidate for the honours degree provided a sufficiently high standard has been achieved in fulfilling the requirements for The Bachelors degree.

To qualify for the honours degree, a student must complete satisfactorily 36 units of study as specified. The program requires one year of full-time study or the equivalent part-time.

Course aims

Creative Writing

The Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) in Creative Writing aims to:

  • provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to research and present, both orally and in writing, an extended piece of research
  • build on skills developed through the completion a Bachelor of Creative Arts in Creative Writing
  • provide the opportunity for students to undertake a work integrated learning placement
  • allow students to gain industry contacts and develop skills and knowledge about career pathways in the Creative Writing field.
Drama Performance

The Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) in Drama Performance aims to:

  • provide students with the opportunity to consolidate their skills in both performance and production, specialising in one or more specific areas of the drama industry, including theatre and television
  • provide honours students with extended skills to allow them to be successful in the theatre, television, or related industries
  • develop skills in the production of showreels and/or extended audition skills.
Screen and Media

The Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) in Screen and Media aims to:

  • provide graduates of The Bachelor of Creative Arts with advanced skills in the writing, pre-production, production and post-production phases of producing a variety of screen or digital media based works
  • include the opportunity for students to undertake a work integrated learning placement
  • allow students to gain industry contacts and develop skills and knowledge about career pathways in the screen and digital media based industries.

Learning outcomes

Creative Writing

Graduates will:

  • have developed skills to present their research both orally and in writing
  • be able to plan research activities and manage their time independently
  • be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the ethical considerations of research
  • have an extended understanding of the role of the writer in the community
  • have gained workplace experience in the Creative Writing industry, including the opportunity to develop industry networks.
Drama Performance

Graduates will:

  • have gained advanced performance and production skills and experience
  • have produced a showreel highlighting their performance experience, strengths and skills;
  • have a thorough understanding of the complex drama industry
  • have advanced skills allowing them to perform competitively in the audition process.
Screen and Media

Graduates will:

  • have developed a wide range of skills and understanding of the process from pre-production through production, to distribution
  • have developed collaborative skills to work with the broad range of professionals involved in the screen or digital media industry, and their peers
  • be able to plan research activities and manage their time independently
  • be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the ethical considerations of research
  • be able to demonstrate a high level of motivation, knowledge and skill for a specialised area of production or post-production
  • have had the opportunity to gain workplace experience in the screen production or digital media industry, and to develop industry networks.

To proceed to honours students normally are expected to have achieved grades of DN or better in at least 9 units of upper-level topics in the Creative Writing major sequence.
