The Diploma in Language can be undertaken by any student admitted to an undergraduate degree at the University. The course is offered on a part-time basis, over six consecutive semesters concurrently with a bachelor degree, thus adding one extra year to the overall study program.
The course is offered by the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Law.
The requirements for the Diploma in Language must be undertaken over at least three years; language studies cannot be confined solely to the additional year.
The languages available are Chinese, French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek, or Spanish.
Students can be accommodated at either beginners' or advanced (equivalent to Year 12 SACE continuers level) levels of linguistic competence.
Admission requirements
Students can undertake the Diploma in Language if they have been admitted to any undergraduate degree of the University.

Course aims
The Diploma in Language aims to:
- foster the development of proficient levels of linguistic, socio-cultural and communicative competencies in French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek or Spanish
- expose students to a wide body of specific and cross-disciplinary knowledge relative to linguistic and cultural knowledges and practices (grammar, literature, translation, cinema, etc) relative to the language of study
- develop students ability to analyse and respond to written and visual texts of varying difficulty relative to the language of study;
- develop students' awareness of local and global communities of speakers relative to the language of study
- train students to form broad conceptual understandings of issues relating to cross- and intercultural communication
- provide opportunities for metacognitive training to enhance language acquisition and maximise opportunities to progress in language learning within and beyond the classroom.
Learning outcomes
At the completion of the Diploma in Language, students are expected to:
- be able to communicate at a proficient level of competence in the target language
- be able to demonstrate broad knowledge of the language of study;
- have developed critical understanding of key cultural aspects relative to the language of study
- be aware and have gained an understanding of the communities of the target language speakers
- be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to cross- and inter-cultural communication and be better equipped to interact in a global, yet multilingual and multicultural world
- have developed understanding and respect for local and global cultural and linguistic diversity
- have developed an understanding of themselves as languages learners and users.
Program of study
To qualify for the Diploma in Language, a student must complete the required program of study for his/her undergraduate degree and 36 units chosen from one language in the Diploma in Language, with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study:
- 27 units of Language topics, and
- 9 units of Culture topics.
No topic may be counted towards both the degree and the Diploma in Language.
Not all topics are necessarily available in a given year.
