Bachelor of Theology (Honours)

Admission requirements

Students may enter the Theology Honours program if they have completed one of the following with a grade of P (Pass) or better in each topic:

  • a Flinders three year Bachelor of Theology degree
  • a Flinders Bachelor of Theological Studies (BThSt)
  • any other tertiary qualification deemed equivalent to the Flinders Bachelor of Theology (BTh) or BThSt; or
  • the first three years of the four year Flinders BTh; and
  • in the case of a Flinders qualification have passed 36 units of work at upper year level (excluding any first year level) with grades of CR (Credit) or better, at least 12 units of which must be from the discipline or area of study chosen for Honours; or
  • in the case of a tertiary qualification from another institution, their performance in obtaining that qualification was of a standard considered sufficient by the School; and
  • have successfully completed the topic THEO2701 Biblical Greek 1, or its equivalent.

Course Aims

The Bachelor of Theology (Honours) aims to

  • enable students to extend their knowledge and skills developed through completion of the Bachelor of Theology
  • provide students with a thorough understanding of the ethical considerations of research
  • provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to research and present an extended piece of research, both orally and in writing, in an area of systematic theology, biblical studies, church history or ministry studies.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the Bachelor of Theology (Honours), students will

  • have conducted a piece of extended research in an area of systematic theology, biblical studies, church history or ministry studies
  • be able to demonstrate an advanced understanding of theological knowledge and theory in a specific area
  • be able to analyse and critically evaluate ideas and concepts
  • have demonstrated the ability to review information and analyse results to independently sustain a reasoned, academic argument
  • be able to demonstrate their ability to plan research activities and manage their time independently
  • have developed skills to present their research both orally and in writing
  • be able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the ethical considerations of research.

Program of study

Students undertaking an Honours program need to contact the Honours Coordinator prior to enrolling in order to determine their program of study and the appointment of a thesis supervisor.

The Honours program in Theology consists of 36 units comprising an Honours Thesis of 13.5 or 18 units and coursework topics. Students can undertake their Honours program in any of the following streams:
